What is an Endovascular AV Fistula?

When a patient's kidney disease progresses to the point that their kidneys are far below normal function, their doctor will recommend that they begin receiving dialysis.  Hemodialysis is a life-sustaining treatment that helps rid the body of wastes that healthy kidneys would normally remove.  Before they can start hemodialysis treatments, a patient must have an access procedure.  There are multiple options for dialysis access; your physician will discuss these with you and make a recommendation for which would be best for you.

One type of dialysis access is an arteriovenous fistula, also known as an AV fistula or an AVF.  An AV fistula can be created in two ways-- either surgically or through a minimally invasive procedure called an endovascular AV fistula (endoAVF).

A physician can create an endovascular AV fistula while the patient is under local anesthesia or regional anesthesia, rather than general anesthesia.  Because it is non-surgical, an endovascular AV fistula procedure won't leave a surgical scar.

Patients can receive an endoAVF as an outpatient procedure in an office-based setting, such as our cutting-edge endovascular outpatient lab, located right here in Mobile, AL.  It's the first of its kind in Alabama, and we are now performing the region's first office-based endoAV fistula procedures!
