What is TCAR?
TCAR, or transcarotid artery revascularization, is an innovative, minimally invasive surgical approach for the treatment for carotid artery disease and the prevention of strokes due to plaque in the carotid artery.
The TCAR procedure requires only a small incision at the neckline. Thanks to groundbreaking technology, the surgeon is able to temporarily reverse the flow of blood during the procedure. This means that if any bits of plaque break off during the surgery, they will be diverted away from the brain, protecting against a stroke. Any loosened plaque is filtered out before the blood flow resumes its normal direction.
During the TCAR procedure, the surgeon places a stent in the artery to stabilize the existing plaque in the carotid artery. With the stent in place, the plaque can no longer break loose and cause a stroke.
